Awards
Honos Awards (Huntley Values)
Honos Awards will reinforce the values and beliefs espoused in the philosophy of Huntley, which seek to help the boys to develop and clarify their own values and beliefs, and to respect and be sensitive to the rights of individuals, families, or groups who hold values and attitudes different to their own. These values include honesty, reliability, helpfulness, respect and support for others, tolerance, fairness, and compassion. They will also assist them to examine the context and implications of their own values and those of others, and the values on which the Huntley structures are based.

The system is simply based upon a system of levels. The first level is green and when a boy gains 10 positive points on that colour he advances to the next level (blue) and so on through red to gold. An individual's points become part of a school total. The intention is to reward the School as a whole and to recognise an individual's contribution as part of that 'whole'.

Honos Award Badges
The Huntley Honos Award Badge is designed to lift the profile of those boys who regularly display ‘Huntley Values’.

Each week boys are given positives from staff for displaying ‘Huntley Values’; an example of this may fit into any of the above criteria. i.e. picking up litter around school, being helpful and supportive towards another boy or member of staff, being enthusiastic by simply saying good morning with a smile on his face. Boys strive towards finishing their Gold Level for the term’s Honos Board, this is achieved through earning positives and is an end of term award. Boys can also earn a Huntley Honos Badge on a weekly basis.

Every boy in the school has the opportunity to earn a ‘Huntley Honos Award Badge’ each week. The criteria is simple really. No demerits and lots of positives. There is no set amount of positives to earn the Honos Award; the cut off will vary each week, depending on how many positives have been given out for that week. However, there will be at least 5 – 15 boys in Years 4 – 6, 5 – 15 boys in Year 7, and 5 – 15 boys in Year 8 who will be awarded the Honos Award each week. Boys will wear these badges on their red jerseys or ‘Bests’ if wearing them, from Monday to Fridays. The Honos Award Badge will awarded each Monday and then the boys will be asked to hand in their badges on the Friday. The process will then start again on the next Monday. The boys enjoy earning and wearing a ‘Huntley Honos Award Badge’ and is an award they strive for each week.

Gold Stars
Awarded to Year 8 boys who consistently display Huntley values. This award is only superseded by a black, red or gold badge.

Classroom Awards
We are presently in the process of developing a new Classroom Awards system. It will be based on effort and we intend to inform parents in the middle and at the end of every term how their son is performing.

Prizes
Boys are awarded prizes at the end of the school year. They reward service in a particular area, achievement, or consistent effort. Class prizes are awarded as per classroom awards. Special Prizes are also awarded (criteria stated in the School Magazine).

Positive and Demerit Points
Boys can gain positive points for being helpful, supportive, kind and reliable. These points go towards the Honos Points earned throughout the term.

Boys can gain demerit points for various misdemeanours around the school. These are given by the staff and are displayed on the wall in the corridor.

If a boy accumulates two to four demerit points in a week he will be spoken to by the Senior staff and various tasks set.

If a boy gets five demerit points in a week he will have to do a “Defaulters” detention which occurs during the weekend. Defaulters takes priority over other activities and will result in a boy missing his Discretionary Leave for that weekend.

The system is designed to make him think about his actions.

A boy will not be awarded Headmaster’s Colours, even if he has performed at an outstanding level, if his general behaviour around the School does not reflect Huntley Values. If a Headmaster’s Colour is gained, the reflecting of Huntley Values must be maintained. Failure to do so may result in the Colour/s being forfeited.
When a boy is awarded his Headmaster’s Colours he hands back his school colour badge as a Headmaster’s Colour supercedes a school colour.

Clubs
There are many club activities held on a Thursday afternoon during Winter Terms.

Squads
Each boy at Huntley is placed in one of five squads named after the first five Headmasters at Huntley: Mather, Wilson, Rix-Trott, Strombom, Sherriff.
The squads are under the leadership of a Squad Leader, School Seniors or Squad Seniors and a Squad Master. Each squad is responsible for one duty day each week, and every fifth weekend. The squads are awarded points for daily squad jobs. The winning Squad receives the Squad Shield. The Squad that wins it most during the year is awarded the J.H. Allan Shield. The squads are organised for practical purposes, although some fun competitive activities do occur such as at Athletic Sports and Swimming Sports.

Outdoor Education
The School offers a broad Outdoor Education programme which involves boys at every level. Parents wishing to help with this programme are asked to make their offer in writing to Miss Pratt.
Term 1
Year 5/6 camp to Inglewood
Year 7 camp to Hawke's Bay
Year 8 to Tongariro National Park
Term 4
Year 8 Adventure Week

Music
Music teachers come to Huntley to provide individual tuition in most musical instruments. Lessons are given during school hours, day boys do their practice at home and boarders are allocated practice times. A School orchestra exists for boys learning appropriate instruments. If a boy withdraws from Music tuition during a term, a full term’s fees will be charged. The Music Concert, a highlight of the year, is held in the Fourth Term. All inquiries in regard to Music must be referred to Mrs Stewart.

Chapel
At the centre of School life is the Chapel, where services are held on most days. Boys attend Morning Prayer at 8:30 am on Monday, Thursday and Friday, and Morning Service or Evensong most Sundays.

On Sundays, Morning Service is held at 10:00 am or Evensong at 7.00 pm. All parents are invited to attend these Services. Morning tea will be served in the Reception room after Morning Service only.

Parents are asked to check the Calendar for Service times.
All boys sit together and wear blazer, white shirt, tie, best shorts, shoes, and socks to the Chapel Service.

All boys will assemble on the concrete 10 minutes before the Service starts.

At Huntley, we follow the custom of the Diocese of Wellington, of admitting boys to Holy Communion after due preparation. Classes for Admission to Holy Communion, normally for boys of Year 8, are held in the Second Term.

The Chapel, Year Group or Junior Choir sings at all Services. Regular practices are held during the week, notably at 8.00 am each morning, and all choristers are expected to make a real commitment to the Choir. Auditions for choristers are held at the beginning of each year and after a period as probationers, boys are then admitted as members of the Chapel Choir.

Public Speaking
Public Speaking competitions are held early in the Fourth Term, across three age groups:
Senior - Year 8, Intermediate - Year 7, and Junior - Years 5/6.
All boys prepare speeches during the holiday period and speeches are heard by the class teachers with the best few from each class going forward to a semi-final competition. A panel of staff judges the finals.

School Council
In consultation with the boys the school decided to introduce the concept of a School Council. The council consists of 10 members represented in the following manner: chairman, secretary, eight class representatives, elected from each class. These will be changed at half year. The School Council meets at least twice a term. Classes are required to hold class meetings to provide input for discussion and debate within the Council.

Seniors
Huntley has a three-tiered system
Head Boy, Deputy Head Boy, four or five other Squad Leaders (Gold Badges)
Seniors fall into two categories:
(School Seniors) Red badges
(Squad Seniors) Black badges
A boy appointed as a Senior must reflect the Huntley Values (see Awards.) The Head Boy and Deputy Head Boy are appointed prior to the end of the preceding year.
Other Squad Leaders and Seniors are appointed during the year. These boys take on a wide range of tasks with the emphasis being placed upon service to others. Squad Leaders are responsible for all the internal organisation of the Squad, such as the dormitories, squad jobs, and other general duties as directed by the staff.
The hierarchy of badges is Gold, Red, Black. Gold badges have the greatest responsibility and Red badges have more responsibility than Black badges. As boys develop they can progress through the badges.
All boys in Year 8, even if they are not a Squad Leader or a Senior, are given a responsibility in some area of the school.

Godfather/Godson
A godfather/godson programme operates whereby a Year 8 boy acts as a mentor for a younger boy. This programme is of vital importance to new boys as at the beginning of their time at Huntley they are not familiar with routines etc.

International Students
On leave weekends International Students will usually go home with another Huntley boy or to their New Zealand guardian’s home.

During the school holidays International Students, who do not go home, or who do not go to stay with a New Zealand guardian, will be placed in a homestay for the holidays. This is usually with several other Huntley boys, each of whom hosts the International Student for about one week or perhaps longer. Where Huntley families are unable to host a boy he may be placed in a homestay with another family connected with Huntley School. This is arranged well in advance and parents are notified by email where their son is staying and given contact details.

Further information regarding International Students, ESL lessons and application, registration and enrolment procedures can be found on the school’s website or an information pack can be obtained by contacting the office. Jewellery Personal jewellery in any form is not acceptable. This includes rings, studs, bracelets, necklaces etc.

Oral Assessments
Oral Assessments are held early in the Third Term. Guidance is given by the class teachers for the boys' preparation, which is completed in the holiday break. A NZSB representative assesses each 'presentation' during Oral Assessment week.

Reports
The academic year at Huntley is in two halves.
Full reports are written at the end of Terms Two and Four. The Reports reflect upon a boy’s performance in either the First or Second Half Year, as the case may be.
Achievement and Effort reports, which indicate a boy’s attitude, effort, and academic performance are sent to parents at the end of Terms One and Three and are specifically designed to complement the full written reports.

Parent Interviews
Parent Interviews are held twice a year (First Term/Third Term). Parents are always welcome to discuss their boy’s progress by making an appointment with the Headmaster or the Form Teacher. Distant parents are not expected to attend these interviews, and are asked to arrange a suitable occasion when they are visiting the School. Please contact the Headmaster.

Term Calendars
These are sent to parents at the start of each term and outline all major functions, leave days etc. for that particular term.

Travel Arrangements
Parents make travel arrangements for the beginning and the end of terms. For most leaves a charter bus will travel to and from Palmerston North via Feilding and Wellington via Levin. The school will arrange transport to and from the Palmerston North airport for boys travelling by plane.

All passports and travel information must be handed to Mr Osmond.

Lost Property
Lost property is given out after breakfast each morning. If an item is lost the Duty Master must be informed as soon as possible. Parents are asked to contact Mr Calkin if gear is missing. Please note that when gear is not named it is very difficult to identify the owner. All mufti should also be named.

The School cannot be expected to assume responsibility and undertake major searches when unnamed gear is lost at School.

Second Hand Clothing
A second hand clothing department is run by Mr Steve Gracie, the school's uniform supplier,
Broadway, Marton
Telephone: 06 327 7309.

Birthdays
A boarder is allowed a birthday table where he will be able to invite ten boys from his year group or others approved by the teacher in charge of Birthdays. The birthday table will be supplied with a birthday cake, suitably decorated and “candled”, sweets, and lemonade. Parents wishing to provide a cake themselves are asked to ensure it is a reasonable size. Please do not supply drinks or sweets.
We try to keep the intake of food colouring to a minimum!
