A second cousin of the 1971-72 North Otago All Black Phil Gard, Hamish Gard grabbed a try in his maiden Air New Zealand Cup appearance, coming off the bench against Bay of Plenty in round one of the 2007 competition. He then scored his third try at that level after coming off the bench in Canterbury's successful Ranfurly Shield challenge against Waikato, and added a fourth a week later in the successful defence against Hawke's Bay. The scoring continued a trend started in 2006 when he scored 13 points on his representative debut for Canterbury during the early season Ranfurly Shield defence against South Canterbury. Gard later featured for the Canterbury B side during its run to the National Second XV competition final. Originally from Manawatu, where his father Ross has enjoyed success coaching the Marist club, Gard arrived in Christchurch in 2005 to begin studying engineering at Canterbury University. He raised his blazer milestone, for 12 Canterbury appearances, during the win over the Tasman Makos in September. Gard's versatility made him a valued member of the 2007 squad, with the utility back appearing in all but the final two matches of the campaign.
