General Information: Sports

Each Saturday teams travel by bus to Wanganui, Palmerston North and various other locations or remain at Huntley to play in the local competitions usually beginning at 8.30 am or 9.00 am.
Teams and draws are usually available at the School office from Thursday morning. All other matches played are listed in the Term Calendar.

Parents are welcome to watch these matches although transportation is not required unless requested.
Please do not supply food for boys, as the school provides a morning snack.
Boys must travel to and from sport with their team.

All boys are expected to play for Huntley sports teams. Year 5 boys will be expected to play for Huntley teams if selected.

Athletics
Boys run in class groups. The Athletic Sports take place during Term One.
All boys will run in at least two events.
Senior - Year 8 boys
Intermediate - Year 7 boys
Junior - Year 5/6 boys

Badminton
Played as a minor sport in Term Three and taught in PE classes.
Championship competitions are held in the Third Term.

Cricket (Terms 1/4)
All teams play grade cricket in Wanganui or at Huntley. Prep School / other matches as per Calendar.

Cross-Country (Term 2)
Boys run in class groups as in the Athletic Sports. The School Championships will be held in the second term. An inter-school team competes in early October in Rangitikei and Wanganui.

Golf
Boys are supervised and basic coaching is available at lunchtimes for any
boy who wishes to attend. Coaching with a golf professional is organised both at school and on
the golf course. (This is normally only once or twice a year.) Golf is an option in “clubs” in the winter terms. A number of interschool matches will be organised.

Hockey (Terms 2/3)
1st XI, 2nd XI, 3rd XI Primary Hockey in Palmerston North. Prep School / other matches as per Calendar.

Rugby (Terms 2/3)
Grade rugby is played in Wanganui or at Huntley. Prep School / other matches as per Calendar.

Soccer (Terms 2/3)
Grade soccer is played in Palmerston North or at Huntley. Prep School / other matches as per Calendar.

Softball (Terms 1/4)
The School usually runs three softball teams. The senior team is the Huntley Black Sox, followed by the Huntley Red Sox and the Juniors.
Black Sox and Red Sox
Both the Black Sox and Red Sox teams are entered into the Wanganui Under 13 Saturday morning competition. Games start at 9.00 am or 10.30 am and go for 1 hour 15 minutes maximum. Boys travel together in team buses, but depending on numbers, from time to time parents are asked to assist.
Junior Softball
The Junior team plays on Saturday mornings at Huntley with games usually commencing at 9.30 am. These are internal games, only occasionally involving an outside team.

Swimming
The swimming pool is solar heated, and is used from Labour Weekend until Easter.
Swimming Sports take place in February/March. There are individual age group championship events and many other consolation races. All boys will swim in at least two events unless they are non-swimmers. Age groups as in Athletics.

Swimming coaching continues as part of the physical education programme and sports programme. A learn to swim programme is also provided. An inter-school team competes in Wanganui.

Table Tennis
Played as a minor sport in Term Three and taught in PE classes. Championship competitions are held in the Third Term.

Tennis (Seven courts)
Mr John Gardiner, a professional coach from Palmerston North, conducts
one-hour lessons over a six week period in Terms One and Four.
School Championship competitions are held in the Fourth Term for any boy who wants to enter.
Teams: Five tennis teams play in the Manawatu Junior Interclub competition held in the First and Fourth Terms, and an internal competition runs every Saturday morning.

Sports Venues - Wanganui
These instructions are for all entering Wanganui from the south over the bridge on the main highway.

Cricket
Springvale Park - through first roundabout, follow the main road to the next roundabout - park is in front of you.

Collegiate School - follow directions to Springvale Park then turn right at roundabout then first right (Grey Street).

St George's School - follow directions to Collegiate School. Grounds on right 300m after roundabout.(London St)

High School - follow directions to Collegiate School. Grounds on right 200m after roundabout.(London St)

Wanganui Intermediate School - follow directions to Collegiate School. Turn first left into Liverpool Street and Wanganui Intermediate is opposite Golden Oaks.

Victoria Park - follow directions to Collegiate School but turn left at Grey St, right at roundabout (Parsons St) then up hill. Park on right at top of hill.

Rugby
Racecourse/Spriggens Park - turn right at first roundabout then next left (Sarjeant Street).

Kaierau Country Club - follow directions to Springvale Park then straight through roundabout keeping park on your right. Turn right into Parsons Street then left down Devon Road.

Wanganui Intermediate School - as above

Softball
Black Sox and Red Sox - Braves Ball Park, Puriri Street, Wanganui - opposite the Municipal Golf Links on Alma Road.
Junior Softball - Huntley School

Sports Venues- Palmerston North
All instructions are for entering Palmerston North from the west.

Hockey
Most games are played at Manawaroa Park -from Marton, over the Railway Bridge on Rangitikei Line, through the lights and along Rangitikei Street, through the Square into Fitzherbert Avenue, turn right at the BP Service Station (Te Awe Awe St).
Sometimes games are held at Feilding High School in Churcher Street, Feilding.

Soccer
Monrad Park - from Marton. Over the Railway Bridge on Rangitikei Line, turn right at lights into Tremaine Avenue. Turn left into Botanical Road and right into Highbury Avenue. Monrad Park is on the left just past Monrad Intermediate School.

Hokowhitu Park - over the Railway Bridge on Rangitikei Line, through the lights into Rangitikei Street. Turn left into Featherston Street and right into Albert Street. Continue down Albert Street, over Main Street and Hokowhitu Park is on the left just past Hokowhitu School.

Papaioea Park - over the Railway Bridge on Rangitikei Line turn left at the lights into Tremaine Avenue and right into Ruahine Street, past the Hospital and the park is just through the lights on the right.

Wallace Park - over the Railway Bridge on Rangitikei Line, through the lights and along Rangitikei Street, through the Square into Fitzherbert Avenue. Park is on the corner of Te Awe Awe Street and Fitzherbert Avenue, opposite the BP Service Station.

Ross Intermediate - over the Railway Bridge on Rangitikei Line turn left at the lights into Tremaine Avenue, right into Ruahine Street, left into Featherston Street and first left into Freyberg Street. Entrance on left hand corner.

Cloverlea School - over the Railway Bridge on Rangitikei Line turn right at the lights into Tremaine Avenue, right at the next roundabout into Gillespie's Line and right into Herbert Avenue. The school is on the left.

Timona Park, Feilding - from Marton via Halcombe. First left into North Street. All the way down to Kimbolton Road, turn right and then left into Simon Street. The park is at the end of the street.

Ashhurst Domain, Ashhurst - from Palmerston North. Head towards Woodville and the Domain is past the Mobil Service Station before the bridge, hidden behind trees.

Sanson Recreation Ground - from Palmerston North. Through Sanson on the left just before the 100 km sign.

Hockey Park, Woodville - from Manawatu Gorge. Go through the township, turn right at Tay Street - there is a Marae on the corner - then first left into Grant Street.

Pahiatua - from Palmerston North over the Pahiatua Track. Follow track to Town Centre. Cross straight over the main road, turn first right and the park is on the left hand side.

Tennis
Marist Tennis Club Vautier Park. PN. - from Marton. Over the Railway Bridge on Rangitikei Line turn left at the lights into Tremaine Avenue, turn right at Ruahine St then 1st left into Puriri Tce.

Manawatu Tennis Club - from Marton. Over the Railway Bridge on Rangitikei Line, through the lights and along Rangitikei Street, through the Square into Fitzherbert Avenue, on the right after Park Rd.

PNBHS - over the Railway Bridge on Rangitikei Line turn left at the lights into Tremaine Avenue, turn right at North St. At the end on the right.

Northern Tennis Club - over the Railway Bridge on Rangitikei Line turn left at the lights into Tremaine Avenue, turn right at North St. Halfway down on right.

Wallace Park. - as for Soccer.

Te Kawau Tennis Club. Rongotea - turn right at Sanson. Head to Wellington. Third left to Rongotea. Wye St.

Feilding Tennis Club South St. - from Halcombe travel length of West St. Turn left into South St, tennis club just past the racecourse.

St Brigid' s, Feilding. - from Halcombe enter into North St, first left, over railway line then right at Derby St.
