Culturally
The cultural richness at Huntley is apparent from the outset. Music, Drama
and The Arts are celebrated by boys and staff alike. A staggering statistic
is the fact that over 70% of the boys learn musical instruments and the school
employs five music teachers.
The Chapel Choir is highly regarded for its expertise in choral singing and
is often requested to perform at concerts and in churches around the region.
The school has a Jazz Band that over the years has won wide acclaim. There
is also a school Orchestra and a number of Year Group Choirs. Alongside this
is the annual ?Battle of the Bands?, a chance for those budding
rock starts to strut their stuff. All year groups perform in drama festivals
and the Year Eight boys put on a quality production. The school has recently
started an ?Artist in Residence? programme, which has proven extremely
popular with the boys. Throughout the year parents are invited to cultural events
such as Year Group Plays, The Music Concert, The Battle of the Bands, Year 8
Debating, and the Public Speaking Competition.

Music

All boys have two periods of Music timetabled per week which are taken by a specialist music teacher. Singing is a strength of the school and can be seen in the daily Chapel services and at the annual Music concert, which is held in the fourth term every year. It is the showcase of the best instrumentalists and choirs.
Boys also have the opportunity to learn an instrument. Currently, itinerant teachers are available to teach piano, guitar, clarinet, flute, oboe, trumpet, cornet, cello, drums and saxophone, with other instruments available if the demand arises. Examinations can be sat for various internationally recognised music schools, such as Trinity College, the Associated Board, ANZCA and AMEB.
The Chapel Choir is internationally recognised and regularly gives concerts in addition to its weekly Chapel commitments.

Speech and Drama

All boys complete the New Zealand Speech Board examination in Term Three of each year. In addition to this each boy also participates in the school Public Speaking competition, which is held in Term Four each year.
Huntley School believes that all boys need regular opportunities to speak in public and they should have the confidence to do so.
Each year the Year 8 boys put on a major production whilst the younger year groups perform in shorter plays on different evenings.
These nights are great fun and most parents resident in New Zealand attend if possible.
