Physically
Sports

Sport plays a prominent part in the life of a Huntley boy. Training occurs on three afternoons a week and there are matches each Saturday morning.
Apart from the fixtures played on Saturdays there are also matches played against other prep schools on two or three Thursdays each term.
We also host visiting teams from overseas, usually Australia. In recent years Brisbane Church of England Grammar School, Brisbane Boys' College and Coogee Prep (Sydney) have all played fixtures against Huntley.
Importance of sports
boys develop the camaraderie fostered by being a member of a team
- it provides physical and mental challenges
- it provides opportunities to show leadership
- passion and determination are nurtured
- regular exercise is necessary for their health

Badminton, Table Tennis and Basketball are played in the gymnasium at different
times during the year. Boys are also permitted to bring their roller blades,
skateboards and scooters to school. Some boys also bring their mountain bikes.
Golf is also available at the school. Lessons are given at lunchtimes by two
staff members, one of whom has had vast experience coaching junior golfers at
the local Marton Golf Club. The school has ample junior golf clubs purchased
from the New Zealand Golf Union especially for juniors and beginners. Many boys
also bring their own clubs.
Outdoor Education

All Year groups go on a camp in Term One each year. Years 5/6 go to Camp David in Hawke's Bay or to Waikanae, Year 7 go to Hawke's Bay and Year 8 go to the Tongariro National Park.
Each camp has both an academic focus, with work relating to the curriculum, and an emphasis on fun and personal challenges. Quite a number of parents attend each camp.
All the Year 8 boys complete the Tongariro Crossing (claimed by many to be the best one day walk in New Zealand) as part of their camp programme.
| In Term Four all Year 8 boys have a second camp. The choices are: |
- fishing and boat activities at Lake Taupo
- mountain biking in Taupo
- rafting on the Rangitikei River
- tramping and canoeing on the Wanganui River
|
Once again parents are welcome to attend and the demand for places by parents is very high as these camps are most enjoyable.
| School camps: |
- provide learning opportunities outside the classroom
- encourage independence
- allow boys to experience a different environment
- provide personal challenges
- give boys the chance to work co-operatively
|
Outdoor education is an integral part of the Huntley School curriculum.
