Socially

It is the friendships one makes in a boarding school that last for a life time. Huntley is recognised for the pastoral care it provides for students. Our godfathers/godsons programme ensures your son will have a senior boy as a guide who will help make the transition into Huntley as enjoyable as possible.

The presence of onsite staff enables the boys to connect closely with staff in a pastoral sense. Our mentoring and coaching techniques offer one to one guidance for your son with an adult they respect and relate to.

We aim to develop a partnership of care between students, parents and staff. Teachers maintain close contact with parents and are committed to keeping communication channels open.

There are five separate dormitories that also act as the houses for the boys throughout the year. The team spirit of these houses is reflected in the race to win the J H Allan Shield.

Pastoral care

The Godfather/Godson programme operateswhereby a Year 8 boy acts as a mentor for a younger new boy. This programme is of vital importance to new boys, as at the beginning of their time at Huntley they are not familiar with routines and they are still adjusting to living away from home.

All parents of new boys are contacted by the school within their son' s first three weeks at Huntley. A full and frank account is given about how a boy is settling in. The returning boarders and staff are very supportive of the new boys.

Huntley provides a safe, secure environment where a boy' s mental, emotional, physical, social and spiritual well being is of paramount importance. The school is very aware of the fact that the school is a temporary home for the boys. We go to great lengths to ensure that the boys have a positive experience whilst here. Boarding at Huntley provides:

  • safety and security
  • opportunities for growth
  • a stable environment
  • lifelong friendships
  • an enriching experience

Leave, and visiting your son
The majority of the boys are seven day boarders, although Year Five and Year Six boys may be optional six day boarders. They may leave after fulfilling their Saturday morning sporting commitments and return to School on Sunday evening.

Every third weekend is a leave weekend, with all the boys going home on Friday afternoon and returning to Huntley on Sunday evening. International students go home with another boy or go to their New Zealand guardian's home.

Year 5/6 boys can be 6-day boarders, leaving after sport on Saturdays and returning on Sunday evenings.  Year 7/8 boarders also have a floating leave to use at their discretion.

Parents, family friends and other members of the family are very welcome at the school. They may visit:

  • On the weekend (Saturday or Sunday)
  • After school during the week
  • During lunch if they happen to be in the vicinity
  • At their son's sporting venue
  • At other times by arrangement
